A quinta feira de Ascenção é conhecida como o dia da espiga, é o dia em que segundo a tradição, as pessoas vão ao campo apanhar um ramo de várias plantas, guardado durante um ano, que é pendurado, atrás da porta, para trazer a abundância, a alegria, a saúde e a sorte.
Não obstante as variações locais, o ramo de espiga é composto por trigo, oliveira, videira, papoilas, malmequeres ou outras flores campestres. E a simbologia de cada planta, é a seguinte: o trigo representa o pão; o malmequer o ouro e a prata; a papoila o amor e vida; a oliveira o azeite e a paz; a videira o vinho e a alegria; e o alecrim a saúde e a força. Superstição ou não o nosso já está pendurado! ;)
